Our first Italian Greyhound, Devon (Ch. Sharidanes's Will You Be Mine)

Italian Greyhounds are an ancient breed. Small greyhounds have been around since the time of the pyramids, but it was during the Italian Renaissance the Italian Greyhound as we know it was developed.

Delicate looking, elegant, regal, all these words and more are used to describe the Italian Greyhound.  Be warned there are a lot of other words used as well; thief, monkey, little rat and weasel are commonly heard around our place.  These dogs are real miniature sighthounds, they have minds of their own as well as incredibly affectionate natures.  Iggies are likely to be found lying in any available patch of sunlight.  If no sun is available any heat source will do.  Laps are good, under sweaters on laps is better, under covers in bed is best.

Although IG’s are not as delicate as they look, or as delicate as they would like us to believe, they are small and shorthaired.  They do need coats in the winter and protection from freezing temperatures for ears and feet and those Dresden China legs have been known to break.  All this said Italian Greyhounds are not exactly fragile. They can hunt, lure course, compete in Agility and as you have seen on these pages, run with the big dogs.  The IGs hold their own and more in our house.

For lots more information about IG’s go to our links page and surf the web.  Many people before me have done an outstanding job of putting together IG information.
